Tropical Storm Lee: Jefferson Parish Update - Advisory 8
Jefferson Parish EOC will remain on a modified activation until 7am, September 6, 2011.
An interior private levee inside the Harvey Canal floodwall failed near Gate HC33 along the industrial area on Peters Road north of the Hero Pumping Station and on the east side of the Harvey Canal. Initially, to alleviate flooding within the floodwall, the plan was to open valves to allow flood waters to flow into the Murphy Drainage Canal. However, because of a hydrocarbon sheen observed atop the water flow, preventive pollution measures were taken before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) agreed to open valves to drain the flooded area.
Jefferson Parish and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, in cooperation with the USACE, were able to mitigate the high water, ultimately preventing damage to businesses inside the floodwall.
Boomtown Casino New Orleans announced a voluntary closure yesterday as a precaution due to rising waters generated by Tropical Storm Lee. The Casino will remain closed until conditions improve. At this time, all Harvey Canal Flood Wall gates remain closed.
A group of volunteers from Friend Ships Unlimited, based in Port Mercy in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is assisting with disaster relief in Lafitte. Forty-one volunteers are assisting workers with sandbagging efforts and providing meals for those participating in disaster response.
