Jefferson Parish Homeowners to Save on Flood Insurance

Receive 5 Percent Discount on Flood Insurance

Effective May 1, 2010, Unincorporated Jefferson Parish’s Community Rating System (CRS) Classification has been upgraded by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) from a Class “7” to a Class “6”. This upgrade will result in an additional 5% community discount on all Flood Insurance Policies renewed after the above date.

This discount will be given to homeowners residing in AE, VE, and X Flood Zones (Non-Preferred Risk policies only) that have a Standard Flood Insurance policy through the NFIP. Preferred Risk policies in X Flood Zones do not receive a community discount due to the low premium already received on these policies.

Currently, AE and VE Flood Zone policy holders are receiving a 15% discount which will now increase to 20% while X Flood Zone Non-Preferred Risk policy holders are receiving a 5% discount which will now increase to 10%. Based on the number of NFIP policies in force for Unincorporated Jefferson Parish provided by the State NFIP office, these new discounts will result in an increased overall annual savings to policy holders of $3,401,558. When added to the annual savings amount for our current Class “7” ($9,262,581), this will equate to an overall annual savings of ($12,664,139).

In terms of individual policies, this will equate to an annual savings of $180.00 for policy holders in “AE” and “VE” Flood Zones and an annual savings of $95.00 for policy holders in an “X” Flood Zone (Non-Preferred Risk Policies). Homeowners should contact their Flood Insurance carrier if they do not receive the designated discount on policies renewed after the above effective date.

Unincorporated Jefferson Parish is the first NFIP community in the State of Louisiana to attain a Class “6” rating. There are only two Class “7” communities which are East Baton Rouge Parish and the City of Kenner. The rest of the CRS communities fall into the Class “8” and “Class “9” categories.
