| Jefferson Parish Unveils Blue Dog Sculpture |
|
Beginning of New Art Initiative Join Jefferson Parish officials, benefactors Henry and Pat Shane, and nationally celebrated artist George Rodrigue for the unveiling of a George Rodrigue blue dog statue on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 6 p.m. The unveiling will take place at the intersection of Veterans Boulevard and Severn Avenue. This event marks a crowning achievement in bringing art to public places in Jefferson Parish. The blue dog statue is one of the first pieces dedicated to what will become “Jefferson Parish Arts Scapes,” a comprehensive initiative to display sculptures throughout the parish to enhance boulevards, enrich the community, allow the entire region to experience art outside of a museum setting, and profile our local talent. The first phase of the Arts Scapes project involves the commission and installation of 17 sculptures on medians and public spaces throughout Jefferson Parish. Future projects include a sculpture park around the future performing arts center in LaSalle Park and additional commissions for public buildings and spaces. Immediately following the unveiling, a cocktail fund raising party will be hosted by Jefferson Beautification Inc. to raise funds for beautification efforts in Jefferson Parish. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Andrea’s Restaurant, 3100 19th Street, Metairie.Tickets to the event are $75 per person. Come out and personally meet George and Wendy Rodrigue, receive a free copy of his latest book titled “Are You Blue Dog’s Friend?” and have it personally autographed by George Rodrigue.
